Behind The Lens

Location

Great Ocean Road - Victoria - Australia

Time

This shot was taken just after the sun had set.

Lighting

It had been a dull day, freezing wind and as the sun got lower the light became interesting. As the sun set, there was a few minutes of beautiful even and moody light that allowed the whole scene to be exposed without losing anything.

Equipment

Shot on a 5dmk4 using a 17-40 f4 lens with a 8 stop ND filter

Inspiration

This spot on the cliff face is one of my favourite spots on the Ocean Road. The cliffs wrapping around the twin islands gives the place an amazing feel. I have stayed there for many hours watching the water and sky and fortunately the late light mad it picturesque.

Editing

Occasionally post processing of landscape images can be difficult to get right. The processing of this image was relatively simple, a boost to the contrast and around 12% vibrance boost, a pull back of the highlights and finish with a vignette.

In my camera bag

I'm a Canon user and usually shoot landscape. In my bag I have 2 bodies a mk3 and a mk4, I carry also several lenses, a 70-200 2.8, a sigma 12-24 for those extra wide moments, the old Canon 17-40 ( a great sturdy lens), a 50mm 1.8, 2 Gopros, flash and extra batteries, cards etc. I also carry a very sturdy tripod a manfrotto 055 - its solid as anything bit it will stand in pretty much any conditions. I'll use a carbon tripod if I have to climb far but they can shake in a medium breeze. I like to be sure.

Feedback

Patience is the main thing. I've seen many photographers rush in to a location, shoot it from all angles and leave. Sure they may be lucky, but often it pays to carefully examine the scene, find your composition and wait for the light or the weather, even if it is cold. I find it helps me to set up a go pro on timelapse and wear headphones. The longer you stay the better the timelapse and listening to music helps me to concentrate. Don't forget the water.
