Location
This photo was taken from the Bainbridge Island to Seattle ferry.Time
It was just a few minutes before dawn when the ferry was coming through the Port of Seattle.Lighting
I have been carrying my camera with me every day for a few years now and the lighting has never been quite the same again. The perfect combination of timing, sky/cloud conditions and location. The bright orange of the pre-dawn sun only lasted about 10 minutes.Equipment
I took this picture with a Pentax K5 ii-s and a 55-200mm Pentax lens. Hand held from against the rail on the ferry.Inspiration
My daily morning commute takes me through sunrise for a few weeks of the year. Seeing many different opportunities to photograph ferries, ships, the Space Needle, Seattle waterfront Great Wheel and even Mt. Rainier I was in the habit of always having the camera with me and always being ready for something great to photograph.Editing
I did my post processing in Lightroom making only minor changes to clarity and increasing the brightness of the shadow areas. In my camera bag
I always travel with a variable zoom lens, either 24-85mm VR Nikon with my D800 or I will have a 55-200mm when traveling with my Pentax K5 ii-s. I also have a tripod on hand most of the time.Feedback
The best advice I have is to always have your camera with you so you can take advantage of opportunities when they come up. The pre-dawn light will often be amazing in the Seattle area but it only lasts for a few minutes on most days.
