Behind The Lens

Location

Emerald Downs in Auburn Washington.

Time

This was an early afternoon race.

Lighting

Getting a properly exposed image was tough that day. There were scattered clouds moving pretty quickly so the natural lighting was constantly changing. I was constantly adjusting up and down with ISO, apature and shutter speed. Although I did have to make sure I kept a fairly high shutter speed to freeze the motion of the horses.

Equipment

This picture was taken with a Pentax K5 ii-s and Pentax 80-300mm zoom lens.

Inspiration

This was my first trip to the horse races with a camera. When I realized how close you can get to the track I started taking a lot of shots from different angles. Soon I discovered the most interesting background seemed to be the reader board.

Editing

I processes this image in Lightroom to boost the contrast and clarity.

In my camera bag

I've always got my Nikon D800 W/ 24-85mm Macro and my tripod. On occasion I take the Pentax out because I have an 8mm fisheye and 50mm 1.4 that cover some things the Nikon can't cover. I did not own the Nikon when this picture was taken.

Feedback

Experiment! Keep adjusting your settings to get just the image you want. For some fast action like this it took several adjustments to get a clean, clear image with that very subtle motion blur to show the movement of the horses. Don't worry about "getting it right" on the first shot.
