Behind The Lens

Location

This abandon school house is located near Goodnoe Washington about an hour away from The Dalles Oregon.

Time

We arrived at the abandon school house in the early afternoon while the cloud cover was breaking up.

Lighting

After taking a few photo's from different angles and places we decided to get a closer look and perhaps peak inside. As we approached the door to the abandon school house we could hear the old wood creaking inside. Even in nearly full sunlight during the middle of the day it was a little creepy. As we went up the steps we could see through a section of broken wall near the base of the small section with two windows in the front of the picture. Through this small break in the wall we saw something moving that was definitely bigger than a rat/mouse/rabbit.... so we decided it was time to move on and find some more pictures down the road.

Equipment

I used my Pentax K5 iis and the 18-55mm kit lens hand held for the picture.

Inspiration

I had seen a few pictures of this place before and felt it would be fun to get my own photo of the abandon school house if the opportunity ever came up. A few months passed and as I planned a summer trip I realized the abandon school house location was not too far off the route that we would take from Washington into Oregon. We made the little side trek and luckily had good conditions for a few different stops during that first day of the trip. As a bonus we were able to stop at an old grist mill and a WWII monument on the same day during our side trek.

Editing

In post processing my images I only use Lightroom for minor adjustments. For this particular photo I lightened the shadows to reveal more detail in the front of the abandon school house and also increased the clarity slightly. With such good lighting and conditions I was able to get a fairly good image straight out of camera, although this is just one of about twenty photos I took at this stop.

In my camera bag

I typically carry the standard stuff... tripod, flash, 50mm 1.8f, 18-55mm kit lens and 50-200mm Pentax lens. In addition to these standard items I've added an 8mm fisheye and a 75-300mm Pentax lens as well. Throw in the camera bag, extra batteries, cleaning cloths, straps and a bunch of filters (ND, polarized, blue, green, etc) and my bag is full and my back is tired after some hiking!

Feedback

For an image like this in a location similar to this one I would say the number one thing is to know how your equipment will work in various conditions. If you're driving a few hours off the beaten path to get a picture you want to know how to use your gear in less than ideal conditions. The second most important thing for this shot specifically is paying attention to the background. Of the twenty or so pictures I took from different sides of the abandon school house it was this particular angle that included the wheat fields and distant barren trees to compliment the isolation and loneliness of the image.
