Location
This photo was taken from the rocks of the North Jetty just south of Ocean Shores Washington.Time
It was mid afternoon of a rather overcast day.Lighting
With overcast skies I was trying to get some pictures of kites flying around the beach. One kite pilot decided to go down by the water and the silhouettes looked good and I wanted the pilot in dark silhouette as the kite was brightly backlit and the colors were showing quite well. As I was tracking the kite back and forth I noticed something tossing up and down with the large swells a couple hundred yards out. I glimpsed the Coast Guard boat and then ran over to climb up the rocks of the jetty for a higher view point.Equipment
I was using my Nikon D800 and a recently acquired 80-400mm Nikon VR lens. The photo was taken hand held while standing on very slippery rocks!Inspiration
The large swells and crashing waves where awe inspiring but a bit boring for photos. I had turned to photographing kites at the time but once I noticed this boat tossing about in the huge swells and getting pummeled by breaking waves I just had to try and get as many good shots as I could. It was purely a photo of opportunity, there was no planning involved in this picture.Editing
For post processing I used Lightroom to clear the haze from the picture and increase the contrast and clarity a bit. The overcast skies and sea haze had left the original photo with a rather bright dull look.In my camera bag
I'm currently carrying a Nikon D800 with 24-85mm Nikon macro and the 80-400mm Nikon VR. I keep them either with me or in my car at all times.Feedback
Many years ago, one of the first photography instructors I ever had repeated one piece of advice over and over. "A good photographer always has their camera with them." So many times we see something truly amazing that we would love to have a picture of but we are lacking one or two things. Either we don't have a camera or we don't have the motivation to stop what we're doing and capture the image in front of us. My advice... bring your camera with you everywhere you go and be prepared to stop and shoot when opportunity knocks.
