Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo from the dock of a small marina in Port Orchard.

Time

We were waiting for the 3rd of July fireworks show to start and as the sun was setting I saw an opportunity to take some sunset photos.

Lighting

As with many sunset photos it took a few tries to balance out the brightness of the sun and the darkness of the shadows. With no ND filter I had to play around with settings a bit. Upon processing the image I noticed a couple of cool lighting effects due to environmental circumstances. First, the American flag on the mast of a sailboat was up high enough to be out of the shadows so the sun was lighting it up very brightly. Second, something in the water was causing bright orange reflections from the sun and sky with look like a glittery trail of sunlight down the center of the foreground in the image.

Equipment

This image was taken with my Pentax K-5 iis. I believe I was using a 55-200mm zoom at 100mm.

Inspiration

It wasn't as much inspiration as situation. As I was waiting for a fireworks show a nice sunset developed and I had camera in hand.

Editing

I processed the image in Lightroom. The shadows have been brought up and the clarity increased a bit as well as using the dehaze to clear and contrast the image. Overall not much processing was done, just light touches to enhance the image.

In my camera bag

I am currently carrying a Nikon D800 with 80-400mm VR as my standard. The Pentax has moved to a back-up camera role but it does see occasional use. My bag always has a Nikon 50mm 1.8, Nikon 24-85mm Macro and an 8mm Fisheye along with tripod and extra batteries, etc.

Feedback

I would certainly say, don't get tunnel vision when you set out to capture an image or moment. Keep your eyes open for any opportunity to get an interesting photo. Had I been totally focused on shooting fireworks without considering other types of photos I could have easily waited patiently through a beautiful sunset without a single image captured. Always take your camera with you and always be ready to get ANY interesting image.
