Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on one of my local beaches at Stokes Bay, Gosport. The US Carrier Theodore Roosevelt was visiting and anchored off the bay.

Time

It was taken around midday, as early as I could get to the beach because of other work commitments. I was astounded to find that about another thousand people had come to have a look at the American warship too. The whole seafront was packed.

Lighting

The day was miserable, rainy and dull. Perfect for shooting a Big Grey Battleship under Grey Skies across a Grey Sea in Black & White.

Equipment

This was shot with my Pentax K3 through a 40 year old Pentax 135mm F2.5 Lens, perfect for isolating the subject in the near distance. The shot was Hand-Held.

Inspiration

I had gone to the beach to see and shoot the visiting US Aircraft Carrier, as I was walking back along the beach after shooting the warship, I noticed this lovely family group all looking across the bay. I could just imagine the old man telling his grandson about his own exploits during the war or his experiences of meeting USS Sailors in his youth. As I watched them interacting this shot just presented itself, I knew as I pressed the shutter that this was the shot.

Editing

I had to give the sky a bit more definition as it was completely flat but apart from that and darkening the blacks a bit it is as shot.

In my camera bag

Pentax K3, Pentax-M* 300/4, a tiny Auto-Takumar 55mm F2.2 Zebra (very pocket-sized), Pentax-DA 14mm, a couple of ND filters, a foldup, mini-tripod and whatever my "Lens of the Day" is.

Feedback

Have a good look at the main subject (in this case the Battleship), then turn around and have a look for any more interesting viewpoints, maybe getting something else into the frame. You'll generally find something to make the foreground or background more interesting.
