Location
This was taken at Kimmeridge Bay on the Awesome Dorset Jurassic Coastline.Time
After sitting out a rain storm in the only cafe in Kimmeridge for a couple of hours (it's not a big place), I ventured out onto the rocky, fossil strewn beach. This picture was taken about 2 hours before sunset when the clouds finally parted and gave me some decent light.Lighting
It took some patience to get the right lighting for this picture. The tide and waves were perfect when I arrived but I had to wait for around 3 hours for the clouds to part and let some sunshine in. Fortunately this delay meant that the sun was nice and low adding to the drama of the scene.Equipment
This was shot with a Pentax K3 and an HD Pentax-DA 15mm Limited lens on a Benbo 1 tripod through a Hitech IRND 10 stop filter and a Hitech 3 stop hard graduated filter.Inspiration
I've been practicing "Smoky Water" shots for a while now at various beaches on the south coast so when I saw the huge rocks and the peninsular at Kimmeridge I was determined to go there to get this shot. I was not disappointed when I got there.Editing
This shot required very minimal post-processing, just conversion to B&W and a little selective sharpening.In my camera bag
Pentax K3, Pentax-M* 300/4, a tiny Auto-Takumar 55mm F2.2 Zebra (very pocket-sized), Pentax-DA 15mm, a couple of ND filters, a foldup, mini-tripod and whatever my "Lens of the Day" is.Feedback
Planning is key to getting this type of shot right. You must be there when the tide, wind, sun and clouds are all in your favour. Oh, and be prepared to get wet.
