Location
I took this photo during an afternoons trek around St Catherine's Down on a short trip to the Isle of Wight. It was the first time I'd explored the Island, I'll definitely be going back.Time
It was that time of day on a long hike where you're wondering if you can make it back to the car before it's completely dark. The sun was very low and the cows were all heading towards the farm. About 6.30.Lighting
The pre-sunset light was lengthening the shadows and giving everything it touched a richer, deeper hue. It's the best time for photographing nature, before it gets too dark to capture detail but softer than the harsher daytime sun.Equipment
This was taken with a Pentax FA 31mm Ltd lens on a Pentax K-1 full-frame DSLR. The shot was taken handheld in AV mode with AF on.Inspiration
This beautiful and curious cow just stood out from the herd, literally.Editing
I always do some post-processing in Lightroom. Normally a bit of cropping/straightening, set the black and white points and then boost or reduce some local colour/contrast.In my camera bag
Pentax K-1, a few old Pentax primes to cover what I might need which is generally 20mm to 135mm. Giottos carbon fibre tripod with Manfrotto Junior Geared head (this is a heavy piece of equipment but it's worth it for the quick and precise control it gives, I wouldn't use any other type of head now.). An infrared remote trigger, eyepiece cover. Hitech 100mm filters (various neutral densities, grads), Hitech polarising filters. Lens cleaning tissues, Eclipse cleaning fluid and a lenspen. Spare battery and a decent torch.Feedback
Practice with your equipment, I like to do a whole day with just one lens, it means that I miss some shots but because of it I know each of my lenses intimately which means that when an opportunity like this presents itself, I can react quickly and capture the perfect instant without thinking.
