Location
This was shot in front of a small Irish pub, now closed, named Robbie Fox's, in downtown Tempe, Arizona.Time
This was shot in the late afternoon.Lighting
Not really.Equipment
This photo was taken with a Canon 5DmkII, mounting a 70-200mm 2.8L lens.Inspiration
The subject was the hostess, leaning against the Jameson barrel that she used to hold her seating chart and other materials. I was on the tail end of a street photography session downtown, and caught the composition when I glanced down at the barrel. She saw me raise my camera, and I shook my head, laughed, and said 'don't move!'. She was a little confused when I pointed it at her feet, and I'm pretty sure she thought I was some kind of weirdo until I showed her the photo, but her reaction let me know I had the right idea when I shot it.Editing
Post processing is a conversion to black and white, contrast adjustment, and selective clarity edits to emphasize the text of the barrel over the legs and shoes. My choices there were to clearly emphasize the text, and make the hostess's legs less of a distraction and more of an additional detail, once the viewer's eyes began to wander. In my camera bag
For street photography, I'll shoot 70-200mm on full frame, or 24mm prime on a crop body.Feedback
I love shooting the 70-200mm wide open. An element of composition that I stress when teaching is paying attention to what your eye catches on when looking at a photo. It's easy to single out an element with a lens like this one, but selecting a background for that element is where it becomes a story. The style of painted text on the wooden barrel, the bricks, the almost unidentifiable period of the shoes present questions to the viewer of period and location. Even though I shot it in suburban Arizona, this photo could very well have been taken in Ireland. A long lens and a wide aperture let you filter out the surroundings, remove elements that may conflict with the story your photo will tell.
