Location
This photo was shot in a huge field, in or around the Smoky Mountain National Park, near Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. I vacation regularly with a large group of friends, and outings like this are almost magical. The kids had been cooped up in the car all morning, and I certainly appreciate their opportunity to run with seeming abandon!Time
This photo was taken in the early afternoon, on a partly cloudy but otherwise sunny day.Lighting
Not so much. =)Equipment
This photo was taken with a Canon 7D, mounting a 70-200mm 2.8L. When shooting outdoors, hoping to see wildlife, I like to maximize my opportunities with the 70-200mm, by using it with a crop sensor. I keep my 5DmkII in the bag with a 24mm 1.L mounted, for wide landscape opportunities.Inspiration
I'd already snapped a few shots of the kids running, but the youngest couldn't hope to keep up, though she tried, and this was completely an opportunistic photo as the scene played out before me.Editing
Post processing is a crop, for balance, minor tone adjustments, and an increase in contrast to make the colors pop a bit more.In my camera bag
I shoot primarily with a Canon 5DmkII, with a 70-200mm 2.4L as my go-to lens for a number of photography styles. I'll follow that with a 24mm 1.4L for landscapes and astrophotography, or sometimes a plain ol' 50mm 1.8 'Nifty Fifty' if I'm in a mood. My second body is a Canon 7D, which I love shooting just as much. The crop sensor combined with the 24mm 1.4L produces great images, a favorite if I'm doing street photography. For events, I'll carry both, leveraging a double Spider Holster to keep my hands free and make managing my equipment easy.Feedback
Always be composing! When I've got a camera in my hand, even if it's just my phone, my eye is always looking for great shots. There are moments, some fleeting and some slow, but they'll be gone forever if you don't catch them. I think that's what makes a great photographer, not the gear, not the classes, not the endless shutterbugging. See the moment, capture it, and certainly the more precious the better. That's magic, to me.
