Behind The Lens

In the studio, in Phoenix, Arizona.
Lighting for this shoot was a single light, modified with a 2x3 medium soft box on a boom directly over the model.
This photo was shot with a Canon 7D, 24mm 1.4L. Flash was an Alien Bee B800, triggered via Pocketwizard.
This session was one of my first nude sessions, in my quest to learn how to shoot the human form. My model was Hedy Nerito, a very experienced model who was a delight to work with. Her experience went a long way to tempering my own nervousness. For this photo, we were most of the way through our session, and had settled into a comfortable rapport, both of us relaxed and enjoying the shoot, which I've learned is a really critical element to getting great shots.
Post-process is limited to a minor crop, conversion to black and white from color, and a minor contrast adjustment. I prefer to do as much composition as possible in camera, forcing myself to slow down my shooting, to be more selective and judicious before hitting the shutter release. I don't always win, but it's a goal.
In my camera bag
I shoot primarily with a Canon 5DmkII, with a 70-200mm 2.4L as my go-to lens for a number of photography styles. I'll follow that with a 24mm 1.4L for landscapes and astrophotography, or sometimes a plain ol' 50mm 1.8 'Nifty Fifty' if I'm in a mood. My second body is a Canon 7D, which I love shooting just as much. The crop sensor combined with the 24mm 1.4L produces great images, a favorite if I'm doing street photography. For events, I'll carry both, leveraging a double Spider Holster to keep my hands free and make managing my equipment easy.
Take one lens, and one light. My constant comment here is 'Creativity comes from constraints.' If you're thinking about what else is in your bag to shoot with, you're not thinking about composition. If you limit your options, you force yourself to be creative, to work more with what you have, and that's where the magic happens.
