Behind The Lens

Location

I look this image from a helicopter above the Hoover Dam. It was pretty awesome.

Time

It was mid-morning in April.

Lighting

Not really, natural light is always best in my opinion but as I was at the mercy of the helicopter pilot, weather, and flight restrictions, I think I just got very lucky.

Equipment

My Canon T2i and 75-300mm lens. Not much room for anything else.

Inspiration

I love the lines, the location, the dam itself. Everything about it from the perspective to the concrete and water. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I grabbed it.

Editing

I took up photography because I have a terrible memory. Long story short, a childhood of stressful events impacted my ability to remember things properly. So when I learned I was pregnant, I worried I wouldn't remember my children's childhood events. So taught myself by taking literally tens of thousands of images both on film and digital. Once I went digital, I had to teach myself photoshop (I knew some of the basics from a former career in advertising as a copywriter). But I quickly realized that what I loved about photography was the capture. Capturing that moment in time. Whether it is a smile on a child's face before a birthday cake or a detail of a rose petal, that fleeting memory frozen in time is my photographic aesthetic. So I want to keep my images as true to the moment and the memory as possible. To achieve that, I do as little post-processing as possible. I crop, straighten, sharpen (maybe), and do some (slight) color correction. But about 98% of my images only have that minimal processing and the remainder has none.

In my camera bag

My canon, a kit lens, a telephoto lens, a macro lens, a remote control, a couple of filters, a half dozen microfiber cleaning cloths, a spare SD card, business cards, a pen, rain cover, a collapsible lens hood, and sometimes I attach an extra lens carrying case.

Feedback

Take a ridiculous amount of photos. If you are taking action shots, the shutter to take multiple shots and shoot like a tourist. Take the same picture over and over again from different angles, with different lighting or times of day if possible, with different shutter speeds. Don't follow "the rules". I've taken macro images with a telephoto lens and loved the results. Just shoot.
