Thanks again for the encouragement. I have a macro 100mm 2.8f IS USM Canon lens and had a lot of luck that day. I use high speed burst shooting and fill flash at -1/3 power. My focus button is customised off the shutter button and I use continuous focussing while keeping the shutter button pressed. This way I concentrate on composition and have a good number of images that can be used. This image was captured in RAW converted to TIFF and processed in PS CS5. Regards. Ruwan

Such a gorgeous shot! Love the detail and clarity... nicely focused and such gorgeous butterflies against a beautiful background! Awesome macro! What lens did you use? I'm surprised you were able to get such clarity at only 1/160... they move so fast that they can be challenging critters to get in stop motion haha.

Thanks for the review. I used a 100mm 2.8f IS USM Canon macro lens. Captured this early morning when they have not warmed up enough for fast flight action. Also they tend to return to the same flower repeatedly, so i focused on the flower and waited for a landing.

Fabulous capture. Don't know what kind of flowers they are, but oh so beautiful. Congratulations on being featured as well as other well deserved awards.

Location
This shot was taken in an open air butterfly garden at the main childrens' hospital (Lady Ridgeway Hospital) in Colombo Sri Lanka.Time
This was captured early morning just as the sun was rising around 6.30 am.Lighting
I used ambient lighting and on camera flash as fill lighting.Equipment
I used my Canon 7D camera with a 100mm, f2.8 lens, IS, USM macro lens. I also used the on camera flash to fill light.Inspiration
Butterflies are so delicate, colourful and innocent that they are featured in so many children's stories and adorn most of the walls of children's hospitals. They are mostly seen as groups of the same species. But these two of different types, peacefully sharing the same sprig of bloom I felt taught a lesson to all of us young and old, black or white.Editing
I shot this on RAW and processed in PS CS6. Sharpening and slight saturation with contrast and brightness adjustments were done.In my camera bag
I pack my bag according to the shoot I have in mind. For this image I only needed my Canon 7D, 100mm f2.8, IS, USM lens with lens hood. Always an extra battery and Extra extreme Cards for storage. If I am on a longer trip I have in addition, L70-200mm 2.8f, IS, USM, 10-22mm lens, L24-105mm IS, USM, 16-35mm IS, USM lens, 600ex RT speed light with its radio trigger, Cable release, Lee big stopper filter, Lee ND graduated filter set, Canon Extenders (1.4 and 2) .Manfrotto Tripod and a 5D mark III bodyFeedback
Butterflies are fast flyers with jerky movements making a sharp capture more difficult. As they are cold blooded the best time to capture them is early in the morning, before their bodies are warmed up by the rising sun. I use back button focusing in continuous focusing mode at spot focusing. This makes focusing more efficient. White balance is kept as auto, and I shoot in AV mode. Widest aperture allows me to come down on ISO for better quality images. I use high speed burst shooting to keep up with the movements. Butterflies return to the flowers repeatedly, so you need not run after them all the time which disturbs the entire location. Staying in one place focused on a flowering sprig for them to come settle also can be used.
