A stunning capture of such a beautiful bird. It amazes me how they seem to have a distance meter built in when you are trying to get closer for a shot. You move 1 meter closer and they move 1 meter away. lol :)

Behind The Lens

Location

At the nature reserve Yala national wild life reserve, Sri Lanka.

Time

Morning around 10.00 am

Lighting

This was natural sunlight, fortunately diffused by cloudy sky.

Equipment

At that time I had a Canon 500D with a 70-200 mm lens, hand held.

Inspiration

These birds are small but very colourful, I wanted to photograph one as if taken in a studio with controlled light to mimic a portrait.

Editing

I was new to PS at that time. Overall sharpening and cropping was the main processing I knew then.

In my camera bag

Its changed a lot now. A Canon 5D mark III, 100-400mm, 70-200 mm, 100 mm macro, , 16-24 mm, 40-105mm, Lee ND filter set, Little stopper, Big stopper and a Lee circular polariser. 600RT speed light, Cable release, Manfrotto tripod etc, etc.

Feedback

Have patience, carry the proper gear for the planned shoot, do not keep looking in the view finder of the images ( you will loose opportunities in nature) and do not delete images on the view finder.
