Behind The Lens

Location

Believe it or not this was shot in my bathroom. Samantha would not have taken kindly if I splashed water all over in any other room.

Time

Mid day with darkened windows.

Lighting

I used a off camera speedlight at very low power to shorten the flash duration to freeze the droplets. The light was reflected by small household utensils like white cardboard and mirrors.

Equipment

Canon 7D, 100mm 2.8f IS USM L macro lens, Tripod with cable release and remote triggered speedlight. The backdrop was my black leather laptop case.

Inspiration

I was fascinated with the unexpected nature of patterns splashing water creates, be it a crashing wave on rocks or a simple drop of water.

Editing

I shoot in RAW and processed in PS C6. The background was further darkened for better effect and slight sharpening was done. Finally I blended in the lime from another image of the series where it looks perfectly positioned.

Canon 5D mark III, RX600 speedlite, Lee filter system ( ND filters and Big stopper), !00mm 2.8f IS USM L macro lens, 70-200 2.8f IS USM L lens, 100-400mm 4-5.6f IS USM L Mark II lens, 45-100mm IS USM L lens, 16-25mm IS USM L wide angle lens. Extra batteries and cards, Cable releas.

Feedback

You really don't have to own a Shutter triggering mechanism though it will give more usable images. Tripod is essential and a macro lens will be ideal to get sharper images. Camera on a 8-11f aperture to have all the flying droplets in focus. The flash power set low to shorten the flash duration to prevent motion blur on the moving droplets. Flash is best setup off camera. Use different parts of multiple images blended in layers to get the perfect final product.
