Location
I took this photo just across the Swiss/French border on top of the Jura Mountains, about an hour drive outside the city of Geneva, Switzerland.Time
It was between midnight and 1am. There was a large, summer music festival happening on the road up to this spot and I really wanted to complete this image before the festival let out to avoid being stuck in traffic.Lighting
It was pitch black outside. No moon, and no clouds. Perfect conditions for milky way shooting. There is some light pollution flow from Geneva (in the lower right corner), but this is minimized because I was actually shooting UP the side of a hill. Every now and then a car passed by behind me, illuminating the field and trees in the image, so I would have to retake that shot to be consistent with the others in the series.Equipment
I currently shoot with a Nikon D600. The lens I used for this particular image is the Nikkor 14-24mm ultra-wide. I use a Manfrotto carbon fiber tripod. To get this shot, I also used a head mounted flashlight, to setup my camera and make sure I didn't hurt myself (or the location) in the dark.Inspiration
Looking up!Editing
This image is a panoramic of about 6 images. Photoshop did the stitching automatically. I then did some spot adjustments to bring out the details in the Milky Way.In my camera bag
Nikon D600. Nikkor 50mm, 14-24mm and 28-300mm lenses. Intervalometer for timelapses. Extra cards and batteries. Headlamp. Mini tripod for iPhone. iPhone with various photography apps, such as Star Trails which I use to determine movement of Milky Way over a 3 hour period (very useful for night time star-trails or time-lapses)Feedback
To make a photo like this requires a number of things to happen at the same time. It has to be a moonless night with no clouds. Ideally, if you can get as far away from light pollution as possible, the the results will be better. Composition is also important. I really like the treeline at the bottom edge of the resulting image. Take more photos than you need. I took 4x as many photos as I ended up using in this final image. Finally, enjoy the moment!
