I was on a trip in Lithuania and wanted to take a hot air balloon ride over Trakai, a beautiful city in Lithuania.Time
I was staying in a hotel in Vilnius. I arrived super late at the hotel and had to get up at around 4 am because my pick-up came at 4:45 to drive from Vilnius to Trakai where we‘d take off. I wanted to fly early morning to see the early morning fog.Lighting
The light in the morning was gorgeous. It was ice cold but the sun kept us warm until it disappeared in the fog. Of course, I needed to watch that it’s not too bright especially while taking against the sun.Equipment
Unfortunately, you might not believe it, there’s extremely little space in a gondola. I believe it had 9 compartments for 8 more guests other than the pilots. I took the camera Bad with my zoom lense, my iPhone and a book. It was impossible to take something bulky like a tripod. Plus when changing the lense or using my iPhone, I was so scared of dropping it…Inspiration
The picture was taken right after the start. I wanted to take the other balloon as it had such a nice orange colour and elephant motive. I also wanted to capture this early morning foggy autumn mood.Editing
I did the usual editing, nothing too special. Tried to make the clouds look soft.In my camera bag

À hot air balloon ride early in the morning is just amazing. It was as if the world stood still and you only hear the noise of the balloon. You should travel up light as you have extremely little space. There’s no chance for a tripod unless you rent the whole balloon or get lucky. You can’t control the weather. In my case, I wanted to especially get the iconic castle but it was so foggy mainly also around the castle that I couldn’t take a single shot of the castle. Nevertheless, there was so much to take a picture of that I didn’t have time to be sad about it. Luckily, the balloon rides quite smoothly so there are not too many brisk movements other than the landing. It is good to have a front location in the gondola so as to avoid having the other passengers in the picture (at least if you want only landscape). Make sure that you don’t loose your equipment above the clouds.
