Behind The Lens
Location
This was taken during the Carfest Festival at Laverstoke Park Farm in Hampshire. Shot from the viewing enclosure next to the track, but just before a sharp corner, so the cars are slowing down as they approach.Time
This was taken early afternoon.Lighting
As it's an outdoor late summer shoot, the lighting was by the sun. There was a breeze and some scattered cloud so the exposure could change rapidly during a pass by one of the cars.Equipment
Hand held shot with my Canon 800D. Sigma 24-125 zoom lens. Camera on AI focus to follow the subject as it aproached.Inspiration
I was looking to capture the sense of motion of the cars. The parades lasted an hour or so, with each car or group of cars making 2 or 3 laps of the track. That gave plenty of opportunity to practice panning and zooming at the same time.Editing
As usual with me, not much post processing. Setting the white balance and profile and a little tweaking of levels is about it.In my camera bag
My Canon 800D, The sigma zoom is a good general purpose lens. I usually carry a tamron 100-300mm zoom for a bit more reach (also good for macro shots and a 10-18mm wide angle for landscapes and crowds. Tripod, cable release and that's about it most of the time.Feedback
Find a good viewpoint and take loads of shots, try different mixes of aperture and shutter speed to get the effect you want, until you find a combination that works. Then practice, practice and practice to get the co-ordination of the panning and zooming together.
