Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in woodland at the fantastic Fordhall farm, a community owned farm with a mission to reconnect people with the land. It's fully working farm but committed to sustainable farming and has been farmed by organic methods since the 1940's. The woodlands are on a steep slope near the River Tern

Time

This was taken mid afternoon during a break while working as a volunteer. Mid-afternoon is not normally renowned for landscapes but can be great for more close-up work

Lighting

All natural light. The higher angle of the sun gave a good light onto the top of the flowers.

Equipment

My trusty Canon 800D with a tamron 100-300mm zoom lens. The lens is a good affordable macro lens. It was shot wide open at f4.5 and 1/800 of a sec shutter speed, allowing the shot to be taken handheld from very low down.

Inspiration

I love the outdoors in general but I have a special love for woodland. The Fordhall woods have been left largely untouched by the farming around them, giving nature a chance to blossom, if you'll pardon the pun.

Editing

Not much post processing, some minor cropping in lightroom, setting white balance and a little tweak to the shadows and highlights was about it. I added tiny amount of vignette just to push the eye to the middle of the picture.

In my camera bag

Camera body is an 800D, after that it depends on the situation but normally, my 100-300 zoom for wildlife and macro work, a sigma 24-125mm which is a fantastic general purpose lens and lives on the body most of the time. A canon 10-18mm wide angle for broader landscapes. A tripod, cable release are about it.

Feedback

Take photos; where ever you are, whenever you can. But change settings, point of view, try things and see what works for you. Get onto manual and control the processing but most of all enjoy the whole experience. Don't just leave your photos on a drive, share them, or if there's one you like get it printed and put it on a wall!
