Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a hill near Vienna in Austria - I'm glad I know the place where those wildflowers - small pasque flowers [Pulsatilla pratensis (subsp. nigricans)] - are growing.

Time

I usually shoot in the morning - which drives me out of bed at 4am to 5am. Here I've been looking for the wildflowers on a spot which gives me options to separate it from the background and foreground - and within the golden hour in the morning.

Lighting

The light of the golden hour can be very pleasing - especially when shading the subject with a diffuser. The purple colour of the flowers delivered a nice colour contrast to the golden light.

Equipment

I've used a Canon 5d Mk IV, a Sigma 180/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro lens and a Berlebach mini tripod.

Inspiration

The small pasque flowers are one of the heralds of spring - and I always love to shoot them in my start of season. As they are delicate flowers, I want to increase the tender impression by using a matching light situation and a quite image scale using a wide open aperture to show them in a beautiful abstracted bokeh version of their habitat.

Editing

Usually I don't do much besides basic RAW development like sharpening, tonal correction, optimizing contrast and white balancing. Here I did a little retouching too to remove very few distracting parts (blades of grass).

In my camera bag

Canon 5d Mk iv, Canon 16-35/4 L IS, Sigma 180/2.8 macro, Sigma 85/1.4 Art, Sigma 120-300/2.8 OS Sports, bean bag, Sirui and Berlebach tripods, reflectors and diffusors, gradient filters, polarization filter

Feedback

If you're shooting wildflowers it's always good to know about the spot you're shooting it - to know where the sun will rise, where the flowers stand on good spots to capture them with beautiful bokeh. To check where the sun will rise smartphone tools like Sun Surveyor can be of great help.
