After surviving millions of years a variety of human causes including feeding on carrion contaminated with lead shot resulted in the California condor being reduced to just 22 birds by the late 1980s. All were captured in a last ditch effort to save the species through captive breeding and reintroduction back into the wild. The program has been a success. Today there are now hundreds of condors both in captivity and in the wild. This is a composite photo. The pair of birds were photographed at the World Center for Birds of Prey in Idaho, one of the major breeding sites. The background was added later.
