Behind The Lens

Location

I belong to a community photography group and this image was taken during one of our field trips. There is a nearby botanical gardens that is quite popular for their diverse and seasonal displays. This was taken there at Kanapaha Botanical Gardens, in Gainesville, Florida.

Time

We always try to arrive at opening time because the light is softer in the mornings so this had to have been taken around 9am.

Lighting

There is a beautiful canopy of growth that covers the grounds so the light is filtered through giant bamboo, palms and other tall growing plants.

Equipment

I am highly attractive to mosquitoes and I didn’t want take the chance of getting repellent on my equipment so this was taken with my cellphone.

Inspiration

I’d always seen photos of passionflowers but never seen one in person. I was really excited to see this bloom and was trying to think of a unique way to capture the unusual beauty of it.

Editing

Since this was captured with my cellphone I did some fine tuning with Snapseed and then sharpened it with Topaz Labs AI sharpener.

In my camera bag

My photo bag is a LowePro Slingshot so it’s pretty compact. That means I need to tailor the contents for every outing. Of course my camera body will always be in the bag, a Nikon D850. Depending on the type of shooting doing, there will be either a Nikon zoom 18-200mm, or my Sigma f1.4 50mm (great for night shots), extra battery, memory cards and microfiber cleaning cloth. My tripod is a heavyweight aluminum one but I’m hoping to upgrade to a carbon fiber one. I don’t usually carry my speed light unless I’m taking portraits.

Feedback

Keep your eyes open and learn to develop a “photographer’s eye”. That means being able to envision something spectacular in what most people find ordinary. The best advice I ever received from an experienced photographer was to check the scene behind you while everyone else was looking forward. That’s where you’ll find the hidden shots.
