Location
This image was taken at Arches National Park. I spent the day there and as the shadows started getting long, we took a break at the visitor's center and then, after sundown, we made our way back to this location for a star shoot. The light pollution of Moab, Utah, is in the background on the right.Time
This was early evening, with just enough darkness to bring out the stars in a designated "Dark Sky"space. The arch was lightened in Lightroom so the lighting is balanced. This was taken on May 7, 2007, at approximately 8:30 pm.Lighting
This was a tricky lighting situation. I wanted a good exposure in the rock formation but also needed the sky dark enough to illustrate the stars. Thankfully, Arches National Park is a designated Dark Sky area, so the area got quite dark after sundown.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D50, with a Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. ISO 1600, 35mm, 10 sec. Bogen tripod (weighed a TON).Inspiration
I love the stark desert landscapes and with the addition of a starry sky, I thought it added a measurement of scope. The Arch took millennia to come to be and the stars are timeless. We are eternal and yet minuscule in the grand scheme of our universe.Editing
This was originally processed in Photoshop Elements and then re-processed in Lightroom Classic years later. The arch was lightened to bring out the details. In my camera bag
I'm a Nikon fan and have been since 1989 when I bought my first 6006s. I NOW have a D850 with a Nikon 24-200mmVR lens. I carry two extra (and fully charged) batteries. I learned this from my wedding business days! I have an original LensBaby, a 6 stop ND filter, a 2x teleconverter and lots of extra memory cards. Of course there is a microfiber cleaning cloth, a granola bar and a bottle of water!Feedback
PATIENCE! Beauty is all around us, but sometimes a breathtaking shot takes scouting out that extra compositional element that only comes with determination and patience to see things through. Waiting for the right light, the right cloudless or cloud-filled sky, the perfect sunset can take several trips to your perfect spot.
