Yes indeed, New England is the best place for fall colors. Great job and congratulations.

We, my wife and I, sailed on a cruise along the east coast especially for me to photograph fall colors. We went as far north to Canada. Unfortunately, it was very cold and rainy and the foliage for color wasn't fully there. We had a great cruise anyway exploring New England the Canadian Islands.

Location
My husband gifted me with a trip to New England in the autumn. We traveled throughout Vermont and New Hampshire. I researched popular photo opportunity spots but the best area was Franconia Notch, where this was taken. Of course, being as popular as it is, I hiked a bit up along this stream to get more color and less people.Time
This was late afternoon. The sun was filtering through the leaves but without the harshness of the midday’s rays. The earlier day was warm but was just beginning to get that Fall nip in the air.Lighting
The light filtering through the tree canopy was just enough to light the stream without creating blowouts. I stopped down the aperture just to be sure and it created a nice depth of field throughout the image.Equipment
I guess this camera would be considered an antique now, but it was my very first digital camera after shooting film for many years. This was taken with my Nikon D50. It’s still a reliable workhorse and I still own it. The lens was a kit Nikon zoom 85-200mm. Since my Bogen tripod was a tank, I hiked up this stream with only a monopod.Inspiration
It’s hard not to be inspired when you’re surrounded with such incredible natural beauty and the whole purpose of our road trip was to shoot the Fall colors, my challenge was to find the composition. When I saw this stream and especially the flat rock with the water falling from it, I knew I had the right combination. I wanted to include the dead leaves in the foreground too.Editing
This was processed with ACR in photoshop because my D50 did not have the memory to capture RAW. I just used the basic menu to correct the white balance, exposure, and black point. Then, in the neural filters, I added about 25% autumn but had to dial it back to 10% because it was turning the water to orange juice. I would have liked to add some reds in the the tree leaves but didn’t want to compromise the integrity of what I already had.In my camera bag
Today, I’ve upgraded twice from my D50 and now pack my Nikon D850. I have a Nikkor 18-200mm lens, a Sigma 50mm prime lens and a first generation LensBaby. I have plenty of memory cards and two extra batteries.Feedback
Don’t be afraid to move off the beaten path to find your desired composition. I prefer to not have people in my pictures so I like to compose where they are less likely to be. It also means being patient to allow them to move out of the field of view. A good tripod will be your best friend. Care for your personal safety when you are in the wild by bringing a buddy or having bug or bear repellent.
