Behind The Lens
Location
This was taken at Mud Lake in Ottawa. It is a popular spot for photographers wanting to get pictures of water birds. I was on a photography meetup, and the group was on a dock taking pictures of some ducks. This young heron flew in and landed a couple of feet from us and started looking for fish. We all had our cameras ready and starting shooting as soon as he ducked his head under water. I had made sure to have the exposure set up and the camera on AI focus and continuous shoot so I could capture the action.Time
This was just before sundown.Lighting
The light was coming in fairly lowly from the right.Equipment
I used a Canon 6D Mark 2 and a Canon 70-300 zoom lens.Inspiration
The heron landing within a few feet made it an easy decision. I just had to wait patiently with my camera focused on the bird's head (making sure I had enough depth of field) until he finally went for a fish.Editing
I did a crop, some shadow and highlight adjustments and some sharpening. In my camera bag
I have a Canon 6D Mark 2, a Canon 28-105, a Canon 70-300. I also have a Canon t2I converted to infrared with a Canon 15-200 lens.Feedback
When given an opportunity like this, make sure your settings are right (I took some practice shots while waiting for him to fish), and then be patient! Your arms might get a little tired holding the position, but it is worth the shot!
