Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the house of our granddaughter.

Time

We went to visit our granddaughter in the afternoon on a sunny day last summer.

Lighting

Her parents have an open kitchen with big windows. I asked her to sit on a stool with the ambient light coming from her right side.

Equipment

The photo was taken on a Fujifilm X-T3 with a Fujinon XF 16-55mm f2.8 on a tripod.

Inspiration

Every month the members of our photography club come together to view and evaluate photos on a specific theme. In September the theme was mirror. I looked for three different mirrors and found this one in the beauty case of my spouse. The idea was to take a picture of my granddaughter so I would have a reflection of her in both mirrors. Unfortenatally it was not possible to take it in one shot. I had to take a shot of the reflection in the upper mirror and one of the lower mirror.

Editing

The two pictures I took had to be combined in one picture in Photoshop. I started processing the picture in color in Luminar 4, but decided very quickly that a black & white version would be stronger. The black & white version, with some local adjustments, was done in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

The equipment I normally have in my bag, depends if I am travelling in Belgium or abroad. When I am in a foreign country, I usually have my Fujifilm X-T3 with the Fujinon XF 16-55mm and the Laowa 9mm (with a big stopper) in my bag. That way I am travelling light and able to take a broad range of pictures.

Feedback

The most difficult part is to position the camera so that you can not see it in the mirrors and to have the mirrors filled with the lips and the eye. It will require some Photoshop skills to combine the lips and the eye into one picture. If I had to redo this picture, I would look for a better background.
