Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in the studio of our photography club.

Time

To photo session took almost five hours. We started right after lunch.

Lighting

To take this picture I placed 1studiolight covered with a red gel behind a white curtain, 1 studiolight above the camera, a white reflector under the camera (Clamshell lighting) and 1 speedlite to her right.

Equipment

The photo was taken on a Fufjifilm X-T3 with the XF 18-55mm

Inspiration

Every month there is a theme in our photography club. One of the themes was "portrait". I wanted to make a limited color palette portrait like I saw ones on a video of Gavin Hoey. I borrowed some attributes from my spouse and our granddaughter was so kind to help me realize the picture.

Editing

Luckily I got it almost completely wright in the studio. I had to correct the red color of the background a little bit and some of the imperfections of her skin.

In my camera bag

The equipment I normally have in my bag, depends if I am travelling in Belgium or abroad. When I am in a foreign country, I usually have my Fujifilm X-T3 with the Fujinon XF 16-55mm and the Laowa 9mm (with a big stopper) in my bag. That way I am travelling light and able to take a broad range of pictures.

Feedback

This was one of my first attempts to take portraits in a studio. So it is no surprise that the setup of the lighting was the most challenging part of this session. My advice would be to take attention to the details, like the hair, the position of the ear-bells and the attributes.
