Alder flowers are small and often go unnoticed in contrast to the long dangly catkins. Seen up close, the flowers are reddish in color and I think quite beautiful. They are the female part of the plant. In fall they turn into woody cones that often remain on the shrub for a long time. The catkins are the male part of the plant and produce volumes of wind-borne pollen that causes allergies among some people.
