Alder flowers are small and often go unnoticed in contrast to the long dangly catkins. Seen up close, the flowers are reddish in color and I think quite beautiful. They are the female part of the plant and in fall turn into woody cones. The catkins are the male part of the plant and produce volumes of wind-borne pollen that causes allergies among some people.
