Location
This Photo was taken in Margaree, Nova Scotia on the Margaree river. Margaree is on the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton, between Inverness and Cheticamp. It's where I grew up on the river! I am a self taught photographer and have practiced many times on the Margaree river and at many of the beaches around our area as well. I am so lucky to have been able to grow up in this area although it wasn't until after college that I really started practicing my photography every time I came home for a visit! Everyone has to start somewhere and I was so lucky to be able to practice and learn here.Time
I was staying at my parent place on the Margaree river and we have a great view in between the mountain on the river and you can just tell when your going to have an amazing sunset, happens almost every night there during the summer !! but this night I knew I had the perfect spot in mind just down the road from my parents place and I had to chase this amazing sunset. It was about 6 pm when i could tell the sunset was going to be another amazing one. So I got ready and headed out the door for 630 and waited and took a lot of photos along the way but you just know when you capture the perfect shot that excitement and you just want to share it with the world ! The lighting is from the golden hour at sunset. The most spectacular time of day and one of my favorites for capturing photos, great for beautiful scenery and sunset shots but also capturing people as well. one of my favorites for back light for portraits.Equipment
For this Shot I used my canon t5i with my 18 to 85 mm lens and usually I would have to use an ND filter but I didn't seem to need one with this lens for this shot. I also used my surroundings so there was a road rail there that I used as support instead of a tripod. When given all the right elements from the sky there are no limits to what you can capture in single moment !Inspiration
When I drove my this spot I just knew I had to get out to take the shot. The framing was perfect and exactly what i was looking for, along with the perfect sky that I had to wait for, I had tried for several nights in a row to capture the right sunset, as every sunset here looks so different, and waiting for the right night where there is little to no wind as well to get the perfect mirror look on the water was a big factor as well. everything just came together for the perfect spot and timing.Editing
I used a little post processing to set the mood, I brought down some highlights a little and just make the color pop using the dehazer setting in lightroom. and darkened the edges a little. not much was needed other then that for this particular photo.In my camera bag
I Always have my Canon T5i handy and ready to, along with it I have my 50 mm, 35 mm and my 18 to 85 mm lens in my bag, along with my ND filters and my polarizer filters. My tripod although I usually use whatever I have available so sometimes its rocks when I want to get down really low to the ground or sand for photos on the beach for a great sunset, or it could be my knee or a road rail. I use whatever I have around me a lot more then I do my actual tripod. Lastly cleaner for my lens, as well and a brush. I do like to shoot at the beach so the brush is perfect for getting any sand out, and the cleaner because salt water really likes to stick to the lens.Feedback
Keep trying, practice all the time and different times to find what works for you and what you like best and then try again with different settings and different times, the last hour before the sunset is when you want to get out and start shooting but its best to have a location in mind before hand as you wont have time to switch locations unless they are super close to each other but I also recommend staying in the 1 location for the whole time until the sunsets as you never know when your going to get the perfect shot from a particular moment in that last hour before the sunsets. The sky is the limit but it changes so quickly in that time that you could miss some spectacular if you move around to much. Have fun with it, its so relaxing and peaceful to just watch the sunset, try not to get stressed about not getting the right shot the first time or even the 2nd give your self lots of time and many nights of enjoying the sunsets or sunrises as well !!
