Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Butchart Gardens in Victoria, BC. Taken 10 years ago this June

Time

This is probably one of my all time favorite photos I had just gotten my very first camera and I went for a beautiful walk for the first time at Butchart Gardens in Victoria BC. the time of day was sometime in the early afternoon which is when I wouldn't normally shoot but it was pretty cloudy out and even drizzled a little at times.

Lighting

The lighting was perfect for early afternoon, because it was cloudy it made for a perfect almost light box even though I was a new photographer at the time and all self taught I did not know that at the time.

Equipment

This image was shot with my very first digital camera, a Fujifilm FinePix A805, taken with an ISO 200 1/60 F2.8. no other equiment used for this photo although I hope to be able to retake this exact image this year which marks 10 years later !!

Inspiration

This image was taken while out for a tour for the first time of Butchart gardens in Victoria, BC. At the time it was busy walking along the paths to see everything there. we were in the Japanese garden section and I just happen to be walking by at the right moment camera in hand and enough of a pause between people walking by to very quickly snap the photo. I don't even know if i looked at the photo till I had gotten home before realizing how perfect the shot turned out. It was just as I was walking by that it caught my eye and I just knew I had to stop and take the photo as I could see the perfect composition of the tree.

Editing

I did not do really any post processing I think 2 years ago when I got lightroom I may have sharpened it and took down the grain a tad and might have up the vibrant on it to bring out a little more green in the photo.

In my camera bag

At the time of this photo 10 years ago this June. I only had my Fujifilm camera with me at the time. Now I carry some of my favorite lenses and now use a Canon T5i. my favorite lenses are my 50mm my 35mm my 18 - 85mm I do use some UV filters for my lenses when it's too bright out.

Feedback

Just use what you have around you and keep trying different things. if you don't take the shot you will never know how to make it better. I didn't know at the time that this photo would still be one of my favorites. So keep practicing and take more shots then you think you need you never know when the best ones will pop up. Sometimes you have to try on different days at the same place to see how the image will look if you find one you really want to keep trying or working on. I was lucky that for a new photographer first time living in Victoria that the weather is usually a little rainy, creating great lighting not being to harsh.
