Behind The Lens

Location

This unusual animal was on view at the Camel Farm outside of Yuma Arizona.

Time

Being in midwinter the natural lighting was low enough to create a degree of backlighting even in the early hours of the afternoon.

Lighting

Goats are among a very few species that occasionally produce offspring bearing four horns. I decided that the best way to exhibit this animal's most unusual symmetrical feature was to photograph him straight on while taking advantage of the backlighting. I intentionally retained the color of his eyes while converting the rest of the photo into black and white in order to enhance the viewers attention to where the horns come closest together.

Equipment

I photographed the goat with a Nikon D550 camera coupled with a Nikkor 18 to 300 mm lens.

Inspiration

I have only seen four-horned goats a couple of times in my life. The opportunity to photograph such a rare animal I did not want to miss.

Editing

In addition to turning the photo into a black and white while retaining the color of the eyes I created a vignette around the animal.

In my camera bag

Most of my photography is done outdoors often working with wildlife subjects that require quick action. I carry a sling bag containing a Nikon D500 camera, an 18 to 300 mm Nikkor lens, several camera batteries and some spare SD cards. The superzoom lens has proven to be sharp enough to meet pretty much all of my needs while avoiding the need to change lenses. I have removed most of the camera padding inside the bag and replaced it with a gardener's knee pad. It serves both as camera insulation when traveling and as something to sit, kneel or lie on when taking pictures in the field on those occasions when patience or a low profile is needed.

Feedback

Rather than photograph subjects from my standing position I often choose a perspective that enhances its stature by looking slightly upward towards it as in this case.
