Behind The Lens

Location

The sunflower and sky were captured in my backyard on separate occasions.

Time

The sunflower was captured shortly after noon, while the sky was captured late in the afternoon.

Lighting

No special lighting - everything was natural.

Equipment

The sunflower was captured with my Samsung Galaxy S6 smartphone, while the sky was caught with my Nikon D5000 with a Sigma 18-200mm lens. Both were handheld.

Inspiration

The sunflower was wet from rain that happened moments before.

Editing

Both the sunflower and sky were processed in Adobe Camera Raw (via Bridge) to adjust the tonal balance. The background of the sunflower was removed via Topaz ReMask, replaced with the sky shot. Then, the wetness of the flower inspired me to add the water via a custom Photoshop action I created so that it appeared the sunflower was rising from the water (much like the sun).

In my camera bag

Nikon D5000, Sigma 18-200mm Zoom, Tamron 60mm Macro, Tokina 100-400mm Telephoto, Nikon 50mm, Manfroto Tripod w/ ProMaster Ball Head

Feedback

Always be ready to capture what is before you and let your imagination take it from there.
