Modern Icelandic sheep are direct descendants of the sheep brought to the island in the 9th & 10th centuries by the Vikings, and currently outnumber Icelanders about 10 to 1! It is illegal to import any other type of sheep into Iceland so the breed remains pure. Contrary to other types of sheep, these hardy animals are not docile and are very alert and fast on their feet. They keep a safe distance from photographers who stop along the road to photograph them! Both rams and ewes typically have horns, and the lambs start to grow them shortly after they’re born.
