The Victor Emmanuel II Monument is located in Rome. The monument was constructed, in 1885, of white marble from a design by Giuseppe Sacconi. At each end of this symmetrical monument are a temple-like structure complete with columns and pediment. On the roof of the structure directly behind the pediments are bronze statues of the goddess Victoria (winged victory) riding a chariot being pulled by four horses. Victor Emmanuel, King of Sardinia, became a symbol of the movement for a united Italy. His army joined forces with Garibaldi and defeated the papal army in 1861. The Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed with Victor Emmanuel II becoming the first king of a unified Italy. I Gathered this image while visiting Rome in September of 2007.
