Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in a barn in Ohio during a recent trip

Time

It was taken in late afternoon

Lighting

The stall was located toward the back of the barn - there as a lot of light coming in from the right, but it was farther away - the stronger light to the left came from a small window closer to the horse and provided the highlights

Equipment

This was taken hand-held with a Canon 5D mk III and 85mm F1.8 lens wide open.

Inspiration

We were visiting my girlfriends family and I rarely get a chance to interact that closely with farm critters without crowds around!

Editing

light and color were enhanced a bit using LightRoom

In my camera bag

I normally carry a Canon 80D (I finally wore out the shutter in my trusty 70D) with a Tamron 16/300mm mounted, and a 5D Mk III with any number of lenses, ranging from a 8mm diagonal fisheye to a Sigma 200-500mm telephoto depending on what I'll be shooting. I'm usually looking for cool things at random while traveling, so I often don't plan shots beforehand - I'm a pretty impromptu/opportunistic photographer. I've found I spend the most time with various prime lenses and the 16-300mm Tamron though, the Tamron's range lets you capture almost anything on the fly and reduces the need for lens changes out in the open - stay tuned though, the Tamron has issues with the 80D so there's a Sigma 18-300mm on the way as a possible replacement... :-)

Feedback

in lower light situations try and use as fast a lens as possible and use a steady hand!
