Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken inside Sander's Drug Store/Vintage Vanilla in Albany Texas

Time

I honestly don't remember, but I think it was later in the day - I had been exploring a frontier fort north of town earlier in the day

Lighting

This was taken near the back of the drug store, so light was all artificial and ambient, I didn't use a flash

Equipment

This was taken with a Canon 5D mk III and 16-35mm F2.8L lens

Inspiration

Albany turned out to be a neat little town - beside the antique drug store/soda fountain there was an old train station, some frontier huts, a restored gas station, and other historic items

Editing

This is an HDR combined from three different exposures using LightRoom - I switched to HDR as it was a bit dark in the store, I didn't want the shot too dark or grainy

In my camera bag

These days my 'walk about' setup is a Canon RP Mirrorless with a 24-240mm lens, but I'll also carry a 5D Mk III with any number of lenses if I'm looking to shoot something specific. I do have a couple of crop sensor bodies if I want a bit more reach, the extra magnification from the 1.6 crop factor helps there. I'm usually looking for cool things at random while traveling, so I often don't plan shots beforehand - I'm a pretty impromptu/opportunistic photographer. I've found I spend the most time with various prime lenses or some sort of super-zoom so I don't have to changes lenses out in the open.

Feedback

I used HDR on this shot as the lighting was pretty low, but I wanted to bring out the colors of the candy and brass fittings around the store. The 5D doesn't have a built-in flash - a flash 'might' have made for a crisper shot with a single exposure, but would have been distracting to the other people in the shop; I try not to disturb others too much while exploring at random...
