Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in a field near my house. We live in the country, and getting to see big beautiful bucks like this one is always a treat!

Time

It was in the early evening this summer around 5:30. The sun was beginning to set, and it was one of those sunsets that made everything else in the world prettier than usual.

Lighting

I was fortunate that in this photo the natural light was working in my favor.

Equipment

I used my Canon Rebel t5 and Tamron SP 150-600 mm lens, and I balanced my lens on the railing of my backyard fence to keep it steady.

Inspiration

I heard my dog barking like mad, and that usually signals some type of wildlife is nearby. I immediately grabbed my camera, hoping to catch something good. There were a few does milling around in the field, but this beautiful seven-pointer caught my eye. I set up my camera on the fence railing and waited to see what would happen. I must have made some noise, because the next thing I knew, this buck was looking right at me. I purposely moved the camera so that the buck would be coming into the image from the side. I wanted to portray the curious nature of deer, like he's being a nosey neighbor, checking to see what I'm up to. The fact that he had a mouthful of grass and a slightly open mouth only adds to this effect. It gives the buck personality, and that's what makes it a successful image, in my opinion.

Editing

I did some color enhancement to brighten up the vibrant background, and I added some contrast to really make the clarity of the buck stand out against the almost painterly background.

In my camera bag

I have a Canon Rebel T6i and a Canon Rebel t5 with a Tamron SP 150-600 mm lens and a Tamron 70-300 mm lens.

Feedback

Try to capture the personality of the animal you're photographing. Try to catch the animal doing something funny or interesting or emotive. Play with angles, perspectives, and points of view in your images. And always respect the animal's space!
