Double crested cormorants are often overlooked by photographers because they are one of the most common birds in California, particularly inland. They are not the most graceful when they land on water, but they are very graceful flyers and their feathers are beautifully patterned, despite their overall prehistoric look. And their eyes are so unusual, and can maybe be compared to some sort of LED light! They can often be seen perched on a rock or branch with wings spread in order to dry them. This male, recognized by his white head tufts, or crests, was photographed at Sandy Wool Lake, Ed Levin County Park near San Jose, California.
