The drive through the mountains and valleys of Chiapas to Agua Azul is not for the faint of heart. While stunningly, achingly, indescribably beautiful the road is dangerous in more ways than one. We were "lucky" that two days prior there had been an armed robbery of tourists in their vehicles on the road, and the day we drove out that way the "federales" were out in full force, which made us feel much safer! The banditos are real, and yet you cannot blame them. The abject poverty in the region is stunning - heartbreaking - and I'm still trying to decide how I feel about our time in Chiapas.
