Nice capture, Craig. Reminds me of Montague Dawson's "Night Mists". Well done.

Behind The Lens

Location

My wife and I sail on the schooner Stephen Taber ,out of Rockland, Maine, each year and this photo was taken from a small island called Hell's Half Acre in Penobscot Bay where we had stopped for a lobster roast. The small box in the water near the bow of the dinghy contains the lobsters.

Time

This was mid-afternoon and the fog was everywhere. I'm a fog person and love photographing under these conditions.

Lighting

The soft light and subdued shadows is challenging but the outcome is worth it. Overcast conditions are misleading in that one would think there is not enough light but I as able to shoot this hand held at low ISO with no difficulty.

Equipment

Canon 6D, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS, aperture 6 at 1/40sec, ISO 200

Inspiration

As I said above, I love shooting in the fog and we had been sailing in it all day. I was walking around the island and couldn't pass up the view of the schooner being masked by the fog and the dinghy in the foreground. I took several shots from different angle but this was the one I liked best.

Editing

There was very little post-processing on this image. I did a little tweaking of exposure and tone and a small crop but this is basically what came out of the camera.

In my camera bag

Other than the Canon 6D body my go-to lens is the Canon 24-105. I use a Spider holster since I move around a lot and have found that a shoulder strap or sling allows the camera and lens to swing and bump into nearby objects, particularly in tight quarters. I recently obtained a Canon MarkII M6 mirrorless which I have been experimenting with over t he past few months. I usually will not have a flash with me since I prefer natural light.

Feedback

Be aware of your surroundings and ready for the shot when it appears. I am continually surprised by how something that appears ordinary becomes quite compelling when observed from a different viewpoint.
