Behind The Lens

Location

One of our favorite pastimes is watching the local squirrels and their antics from the living room window. I keep a camera handy because their is usually some photo worthy activity. I have a bird feeder on a pole immediately in front of the window and it is constant struggle between the birds and the squirrels as to who will get there first. This fellow was caught contemplating whether to continue up the pole or make jump for the feeder.

Time

This was most likely shot in mid afternoon because the sun would have been behind him earlier and later would have put him in deeper shadow.

Lighting

All natural light.

Equipment

Canon 6D with a Canon 24-105 lens, handheld and shot through a window pane.

Inspiration

This was a 'spur of the moment' shot while squirrel watching.

Editing

All processing done in ON1 Photo Raw. Basic adjustment of tone, exposure then added a small amount of dynamic contrast, sunshine filter and sharpening. Finished with a Big Softy vignette.

In my camera bag

The Canon 6D and 24-105 lens is my basic equipment. Also carry a Canon 70-300 for long shots and some close-up work.

Feedback

Be ready for the shot. Keep your eyes open and have your camera handy. We are fortunate that these rascally tree rats live in our back yard so the opportunity for catching similar activity is always there.
