This photo was taken at The Bomb Factory, a music venue in Dallas, Tx, during Slayer's farewell tour. I was honored to be their lead singer's personal photographer for the night.Time
I took this image during the height of Slayer's last set at The Bomb Factory, the night of June 19, 2018.Lighting
The stage lights illuminating the fog, silhouetting the band, and highlighting the fans in the pit below filled the room with energy and set a perfect scene that could never be reproduced in the studio.Equipment
To get this shot I was "running and gunning" from the second story balcony, using a Canon 5D Mark III equipped with a battery grip and 70-200 mm f/2.8L II USM.Inspiration
I was honored to be asked personally to shoot Tom Araya during Slayer's farewell show in Dallas, and wanted to get as much coverage of the event as possible. When I saw how this angle captured the energy and intensity of both the band and the crowd I knew it was a winner.Editing
I try to keep my post-processing to a minimum, and this image was no exception, with only a high pass filter to crisp up some of the details and a slight boost to the saturation to make the colors really pop.In my camera bag
I rarely go anywhere without my Canon 5d Mark iii and a few "essential" lenses. Namely the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM for my all purpose lens, EF 85mm f/1.8 USM for portraits, and the ever present "nifty fifty," (EF 50mm f/1.8 STM). I also am known to keep the Rokinon 24mm f/1.4 for nature/landscape, and the 70-200mm f/2.8L II USM for sports, along with my Vanguard Alta Pro 263AT tripod equipped with a SBH-250 ballhead, an intervalometer, and various lights and light shapers handy.Feedback
A wide open aperture to help offset the high shutter speed will make the details pop, and paying attention beyond the band will help frame up the the perfect shot. Go to local venues and practice on live musicians as much as possible.
