Behind The Lens

Location

I was driving home from an evening karate class that I teach in a nearby town, when I saw a dramatic sunset in the distance and began looking for a place to pull over and snap a quick picture. When I came across this field, with the lone tree standing in the distance, I knew I had the shot I was looking for.

Time

I vividly remember fighting the grass burs, on this August evening, as I waded through the roadside grass of the bar ditch shortly after 7:00pm.

Lighting

As this was shot on the spur of the moment with a cell phone, lighting wasn't much of an option, so all I got was nature in her glory.

Equipment

This was taken with a Samsung Galaxy S5 and nothing else.

Inspiration

August is almost always a dry time in Texas, and 2015 was no exception, so rain on the horizon was a noteworthy event by itself. But the clouds lit by the setting sun, silhouetting the falling rain, was a moment that I felt needed to be captured.

Editing

The only post processing that was used on this image was a bit of sharpening and some a bit of touch-up to make the colors more vibrant; all of which was done on the Samsung Galaxy S5, with stock software.

In my camera bag

My bag normally consists of the 5D Mark III, 50mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8L II, 70-300mm f/4-5.6, and the Rokinon 24mm f/1.4, but this saw me without my photography gear so my phone was a great stand in.

Feedback

Always be ready! Photography is about capturing moments, many of which are never to be repeated, so having your equipment with you and being ready to shoot whatever you happen to come across will get open up doors that others only dream about.
