Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my East Texas back yard, looking northward, on a clear winter night.

Time

This was taken over the course of two and a half hours, one night in late January.

Lighting

Having turned off the lights in the house, the only light in the shot was meant to be the stars silhouetting the house, but my son couldn't help but walk around with his cell phone and open the fridge, giving the appearance of a fully lit house.

Equipment

A canon 70d, using external power, and mounted on a Manfrotto 60" Compact Action Tripod with a DLC DL-1580 intervalometer.

Inspiration

I've always loved the mystical nature of star trails and, on a whim, set the camera up to shoot this one as an experiment.

Editing

This was a composite of nearly three hundred, thirty second long, exposures of the stars and three completely black frames stacked by luminosity in a program specially designed to make star trail photos.

In my camera bag

In an attempt to be prepared for anything, I have a rather eclectic collection in my bag. I have since upgraded from the Canon 70d to the 5d Mark iii, and have everything from a 24-70mm f/2.8 to an 28-135mm for off the cuff macro, and a Rokinon 24mm f/1.4 for landscapes and astrophotography (one of my personal favorites).

Feedback

A steady tripod, an intervelometer, and a wide angle lens coupled with a little imagination for an interesting foreground and your clear nights can take on a bit of magic.
