This photo was taken in a 36 inch light box, setup on a table in my living room, when shooting some macro dandelion blooms turned into experimentation.Time
This was taken during the hottest part of the day, when the sun was all but too harsh to shoot outside; so I set up a light box in my living room to get some macro photos of dandelion blooms in a controlled environment.Lighting
Playing with lighting was one of the reasons for setting up for these shots. I used an RF550 LED ring flash, the LED flashlight app on two cell phones, as well as the natural light from setting fire to the wispy seed pods themselves in various combinations and anglesEquipment
This was shot with a 28-135mm macro lense on Canon 5D Mark iii, using a wired remote, and mounted on an Alta Pro tripod with a SBH-250 ballhead. The flower was in a 36" collapsible light box against a black background and then set ablaze while lit from both below and above using a ring flash and two smart phones with flashlight apps.Inspiration
While showing off some of my new gear to my son, we decided to set up and try some macro shots. After getting some neat shots of a dandelion bloom, experimenting with various light setups, the next logical step was to set it on fire and see what we could get.Editing
The post processing of this shot was fairly basic; just a bit of smoothing out the background to make it a more uniform black to correct some light spill over, a high pass filter to sharpen the details in the charred seed pods, and some dodging and burning to make the smoke pop.In my camera bag
These days my bag generally consists of the 5D Mark III, 50mm f/2.8, 24-70mm f/2.8L II, 70-300mm f/4-5.6, and the Rokinon 24mm f/1.4, along with my Vanguard Alta Pro 263AT tripod equipped with a SBH-250 ballhead and a NW-565C flash.Feedback
What is there to say about shots like this other than never be afraid to think outside the box and experiment, experiment, experiment.
