Behind The Lens

Location

Varese lake is a small corner of nature populated by many small birds. Varese is called "garden city" because it is surrounded by hills and lakes. I am fortunate to live in these places between Varese, Como and Milan that offer many opportunities to photograph in the city and surrounded by nature.

Time

looks like a shot in the early morning with the haze typical of the first lights. It is actually a photograph taken at sunset. the haze caused by a thunderstorm made the light and the environment very soft.

Lighting

the light is the true protagonist of this scene. the light backlight of the sunset highlighted the birds but the haze caused by the storm made the whole environment very suffused and intimate. The light of the setting sun warmed the scene.

Equipment

it is fortunate that I had my camera with me. I had not organized a photographic excursion. It was a freehand shot with a 55mm. Many times you do not have your equipment available and you must make the most of what you have available.

Inspiration

the landscape is my main passion and the best inspiration comes from observing the environment around you. Everything can have an interesting detail to photograph, it is important to seize the moment. I was inspired by the tranquility of the animals that finally, after the storm, were able to start looking for food again. The light, the mist, the color of the setting sun, the poetry of the whole inspired me.

Editing

for me there are two elements that inspire the photographer: the scene in reality and one's own vision of the scene. This is why I particularly love post production. I can personalize my photo, I can convey my mood. I can add or remove items. This is the artistic moment of the photographer. I want the observer to understand something of me, besides the simple photographic document. in this photo I only emphasized the colors. I wanted them to be homogeneous, I wanted to convey the poetry of the place and the moment.

In my camera bag

my camera is strictly Nikon, I would never change, it is a love of youth never modified. instead I also use other lenses, Tamron and Tokina, several filters, especially ND and a sturdy tripod. When I can, however, in the street, I try to move "light", only with a 50 mm.

Feedback

those who photograph landscapes know very well that conditions continually change according to the moment: the light, the colors, the subjects that enter the scene. Very often I imagined to place the tripod and wait for a whole day for the best moments to shoot. it can be a photographic observation exercise. I imagined the same scene at different times of the year, in winter for example. I'll be back on the spot to evaluate the changes
