Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo during a photo shoot organized by Nikon Italia in Milan. The set was equipped with important lighting equipment.

Time

The photograph was taken in the morning. In reality the model had not yet begun to pose. We were preparing the lights and trying some shots to adjust the exposure. the environment was relaxed and the original photo a trivial test shot.

Lighting

In photography, if we want to get creative shots, it's nice to play with colors. The contrast between red and blue always offers creative ideas. The side lights, the dark backdrop together with the model's inexpressive pose, make the image very mysterious. The purpose of a photograph is to intrigue the viewer, to make him think about what the author wanted to represent. From this point of view, I believe I have succeeded in this.

Equipment

I am not a professional and I have a limited budget equipment, a Nikon D3200 equipped, for this shot with a medium telephoto lens. This does not mean, in my opinion, to be able to make uninteresting shots. imagination and creativity must always be the basis of a good photographic work. The set was equipped with continuous lighting. In these cases I shoot freehand to be free to move

Inspiration

Of course this was originally a test photo for adjusting the lights and exposure. In a second moment, analyzing it well, I realized that it could be used for my photographic project that I called "twins". In this project I am collecting "specular" photos where the fundamental element is shapes and colors. With this project I want to provoke the observer forced to look at the two images in succession, looking perhaps for differences. The lack of expression of the model I think increases this curiosity.

Editing

Post production for me is very important in the creative process of image. In these cases I don't mind representing reality but conveying a state of mind. In this case I used post production to give luminance to the colors and give drama to the image by intensifying shadows and contrasts.

In my camera bag

when I shoot portraits in a photographic studio or in an equipped set, I try to take as little as possible to be "light", "reactive" and "fast". Camera and a pair of lenses are more than enough. Instead, when I have to photograph landscapes, I prefer to photograph at sunrise and sunset, I love that light so I always carry a robust tripod, a wide-angle lens and ND filters and polarizers.

Feedback

I believe the best advice is to get carried away by creativity and imagination. The technique and the equipment are not the most important element. We must get used to observing and interpreting the reality that surrounds us, this exercise can be transformed into an artistic process. When we are faced with a trivial image, here is the challenge: how can I transform this image to make it interesting for the observer? We are fortunate to have so many tools that help us for our creativity. It's great to experiment.
