Great blue herons are an extremely adaptable, widespread and very large bird that can be seen throughout California and other areas of the U.S. Often solitary, they are accomplished and very patient hunters sometimes standing at the water's edge of wetlands and other marshy areas for long periods of time waiting to spear a fish or other small creature. This vole became part of Nature's "circle of life" and was caught in order to provide a meal for the two rapidly growing heron chicks waiting patiently for this parent to return to the nest located high in a eucalyptus tree next to a lake in a local county park near San Jose, California.

Timely capture Nina ! I recently watched a Nature Program on them and hadn't realized they eat mammals. They will even eat baby ducks and other water fowl.
